A letter from the past

Dear Future Me......
You might not remember how things were on this day last year, obviously a lot will have happened in the 365 days since.
I thought it would be good to give you the opportunity to reflect on some of the plans you had for the year, those might have changed!
After all, who knows what the year will bring?
I can say with absolute certainty that this time last year none of us expected that our dear cousin would have less than a year left of his life.
Nor would we have anticipated that our daughter would break her leg; that we’d be home-schooling the kids; that we’d be wearing face masks; that we’d be fighting over toilet paper - indeed that we were on the cusp of a global pandemic.
I guess as the saying goes, you can never really know what’s around the corner.
So with that in mind, here’s what you were thinking on Jan 13 2021..
- you will be a better parent this year, you’ve finally signed up for the parenting course (the one you got the book for about 10 years ago but still haven’t read).
- you will get down to your goal weight, currently 62kg, but ideally dipping just under 60kg. You’ve already dropped 7kg, (and bounced 2kg back up again), you can do it.
- you will make progress on decluttering the house, seriously! Small steps every day will lead to obvious inroads in a year’s time. I bet the pram is gone now?
- the garden will be finished, yes finished! Haha, okay, very funny! The veggie garden will have paving around. That side of the house will be done, and there’ll be a plan for the front.
- and you’ll definitely recall the TED talk you watched today (Tim Urban - inside the mind of a procrastinator). Remember that grid showing a block for every week of your life? No one gets many blocks. Use than wisely.
- work, should we talk about that? Will you be more confident? Will you have found joy in it? Will you actually be in an office, or still WFH? Will your WFH desk still have that pile of junk on it?
- were you seriously more organised this Christmas?
- has your dad benefitted from seeing a psychologist? Fingers crossed he went through with it and stuck at it.
It’s interesting; I think the mere fact of having written all this down will spur some action. It’s like in the TED talk - the ‘deadline monster’ will rear it’s head and scare off the ‘procrastination monkey’. But more than that, I think the fear of failure, of not having progressed, will spur you on to achieving the majority of the list.
I really do hope you’re as happy as you can be. I hope you continue to find gratitude in every day, and understand that you really are enough! And even if none of the list got off the ground, if you’re happy then it doesn’t matter!!
One last thing - more self-care, okay?
Love,
your current, ongoing and future best self xx
